I have started another site where you can discuss anything related to building a flight simulator cockpit. Check it out at http://flight-simulator-cockpits.com Homebuilt Cockpit Software Resources I want to feature some of the essential software that is necessary when building a cockpit. Most homebuilt pits are developed around Microsoft Flight Simulator, and most add-on software is developed around FS. If you are looking for a basic set og GA gauges that run locally or on a networked PC this looks like a great option. The newest from Microsoft with cutting edge graphics and a bunch of new features. But do to very high hardware requirements most may not be able to enjoy FS10 100%. If you own a cutting edge PC FSX is the way to go. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 FS9 offers the sim pit builder great frame rates and decent graphics. since FS9 has been around longer then FSX there are more add-ons available. Also FS9 will run well on reasonably priced PC's. This is what I will be using in my pit. Developed by Peter Dowson. This software will allow you to interface software with Flight Simulator. This software is essential to the pit builder. Basically it allows you to send and receive data to and from Flight Simulator. You will need this if you are planning on using gauges and panels on networked PC's. Gert and the crew at flyware have developed Flight Simulator Gauges and panels which run on networked PC's or locally. This software may be considered entry level but it is full of features. Recently they introduced 737 style "glass panels" and they are currently revamping most of the GA style elements. Cockpitware .:Freeware:. Another good option for the civil aviation cockpit builder, currently this is the most active freeware glass cockpit software available. I have tried it out and it seems to work well and also looks great. With this program you will be able to run multiple instances of flight simulator on multiple networked PC's. This solution will give you the ability to get a completely panoramic view of the flight simulator world. Also with some creativity you could use this system to run flight simulator gauges or panels too. TCAS 2 .:Freeware:. This traffic avoidance radar developed by Danny Ho is a great freeware addition to any sim pit. It gives you a visual and audible indication of aircraft within collision range. This gauge will run locally or on a network PC. A newcomer to the homebuilt cockpit scene and looking pretty good. I think these guys were originally involved with FreeFD(no longer available). If this product is anything close to FreeFD then this is something you should look into. Project Magenta .:PM Sounds is Freeware:. Of course the standard in cockpit building should be mentioned. But the price might scare you a bit. They do offer PM Sounds as a freeware option which should be in any cockpit. If you want the best PM is the answer. |
